What We Do
A Century of Service:
The Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur DiRaja

Founded in 1928, the Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur emerged as a beacon of unity amidst Kuala Lumpur's diverse cultural landscape. With a core group of 25 members, the club quickly grew to over 80, reflecting a harmonious blend of European and Asian influences. The early days of the club were marked by a strong commitment to service and camaraderie. Weekly Rotary Lunches, a tradition that continues to this day, were held at the historic Bok House (now the W Kuala Lumpur Hotel).

Pioneering figures like Sir Andrew Caldecott and Sir Leonard David Gammans led the club, fostering a vibrant community that included prominent individuals such as the Storch brothers, Raja Tun Uda, Choo Kia Peng, Loke Choe Thye, Mungo Park, and Arumugam Viswalingam. These individuals, drawn to Rotary's principles of service above self, played a crucial role in shaping the club's legacy

history

In Kuala Lumpur's diverse cultural landscape, the Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur began as a symbol of unity in 1928 with 25 members, expanding to 80 members with a mix of European and Asian influences. Their focus on service and camaraderie marked the beginning of a remarkable journey.

The early pioneers of the famous club included Sir Andrew Caldecott as the first President and Sir Leonard David Gammans as the initial secretary.

In 1929, the Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur met at Bok House, Presently the W Kuala Lumpur Hotel. Despite a minor administrative challenge, the club's lively spirit led to the official charter reception in January 1930.

Together, they led a diverse group that included the innovative Storch brothers, Raja Tun Uda, a prominent figure in Penang, and Choo Kia Peng, a respected Federal Councillor and renowned figure in the golfing world.

The club's guests included notable figures like tin magnate Loke Choe Thye, botanist Mungo Park, and eye surgeon Arumugam Viswalingam, who were attracted to Rotary privileges and committed to community service.

What a fitting finale to an unforgettable Rotary year. A sea of white, a room filled with laughter, friendship and memories that will stay with us for years to come. President Dato’ Dr Prakash Rao’s Swan Song was everything a celebration should be. From the heartfelt video presentation that beautifully recapped his remarkable year of leadership, to the wonderful food, the outstanding fellowship and the spectacular performance by our First Lady, Datin Malar, together with her entourage, every moment reminded us why Rotary is so much more than meetings. It is family. Thank you, President Dato’ Dr Prakash Rao, for leading with passion, humility and unwavering commitment. Your legacy will continue to inspire all of us. As one chapter closes, another begins. Here’s wishing President Seyed Ehsan every success as he leads the Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur DiRaja into an exciting new Rotary year. We stand behind you and look forward to the journey ahead. #Rotary #RotaryClubKualaLumpurDiRaja #ServiceAboveSelf #SwanSong RotaryYear2025_2026 Fellowship

For the first time, Project Blue Dot will be participating in and supporting a community health screening programme organised by the Rotary Club of Bangsar. As part of this collaboration, we will be bringing our Prostate Health Screening Initiative to the event, alongside a range of other community health services including eye screening, blood pressure checks, blood glucose screening, and health awareness activities. 📅 27 June 2026 (Saturday) 🕣 8:30 AM – 2:30 PM 📍 Bangsar Sports Complex We encourage all members to come and support this initiative. More importantly, please help us extend the impact by inviting family members, friends, colleagues, neighbours, and especially men aged 40 and above who may benefit from a prostate health screening. Every person we bring closer to early detection is a life potentially changed. Let’s show our support for Rotary Club of Bangsar and continue expanding the reach of Project Blue Dot, one community at a time. See you there. @rotarybangsar @pdrmsia_official @myncsm @nationalkidneyfoundation @thoneh_official

Some walls needed paint. But what truly left a mark on us were the children of POKOKON. Behind every classroom door is a story of courage, patience and determination. Children who face challenges many of us cannot imagine, yet arrive each day with smiles, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. As Rotarians, we often speak about making a difference. At POKOKON, we witnessed people who do exactly that every single day. A husband-and-wife team who have dedicated their lives to creating a safe space for more than 80 children with autism. A place where confidence is built, independence is encouraged and every child is given the opportunity to shine. While we came to paint walls, we left inspired by the hearts within them. Our heartfelt appreciation to Organising Chairman Rtn Mike Plascow for leading this meaningful project, and to every Rotarian, family member, friend of Rotary and Rotaractor who contributed their time and energy. Sometimes, service isn’t about building something new. It’s about showing up, standing beside those who care, and reminding them that they are not alone. #RCKLDR #AutismAwareness #RotaryClubofKualaLumpurDiraja #Paintingforacause

Some nights remind you exactly why you do what you do. The Rotary District 3300 Awards Night 2026 was one of those nights for RC Kuala Lumpur Diraja. Among the many honours our club received, we came home with recognition for Most Outstanding Project for Project Blue Dot, our prostate cancer awareness and screening initiative, recognition as one of the Top 3 Total Giving Clubs for PolioPlus, a place among the Top 10 Total Giving Clubs overall, and the Certificate of Recognition for Clubs Giving USD 1,500 and Above to PolioPlus. But if we are being honest, the awards were never the point. None of this happens without leadership that leads from the front. Under the guidance and vision of our President Dato’ Dr Prakash Rao and a Board of Directors who showed up every single time, RCKLD moved through this Rotary year with purpose, discipline, and genuine heart. They set the tone. They held the standard. And the club followed because the direction was clear and the commitment was real. Project Blue Dot was built on the belief that a single screening could save a life. Our PolioPlus contributions were made because we believe a world free of polio is not just a dream but a duty. Every ringgit given, every event organised, every awareness session conducted was done quietly, consistently, and with full heart by the members of this club. RCKLD is not a club that serves for applause. We serve because the community needs us to. We give because the cause demands it. And on nights like this, when the District looks our way and says well done, we accept it humbly and dedicate it entirely to the people we exist to serve. To President Dato’ Dr Prakash Rao, to every member of the Board, and to every single Rotarian of RC Kuala Lumpur Diraja past and present, thank you. This belongs to all of you. Here is to more service, more impact, and more nights like this one. #RCKLDiraja #RotaryDistrict3300 #AwardsNight2026 #ServiceAboveSelf #ProjectBlueDotMY #EndPolio #PolioPlus #RotaryMalaysia
