What We Do
A Century of Service:
The Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur DiRaja

Founded in 1928, the Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur emerged as a beacon of unity amidst Kuala Lumpur's diverse cultural landscape. With a core group of 25 members, the club quickly grew to over 80, reflecting a harmonious blend of European and Asian influences. The early days of the club were marked by a strong commitment to service and camaraderie. Weekly Rotary Lunches, a tradition that continues to this day, were held at the historic Bok House (now the W Kuala Lumpur Hotel).

Pioneering figures like Sir Andrew Caldecott and Sir Leonard David Gammans led the club, fostering a vibrant community that included prominent individuals such as the Storch brothers, Raja Tun Uda, Choo Kia Peng, Loke Choe Thye, Mungo Park, and Arumugam Viswalingam. These individuals, drawn to Rotary's principles of service above self, played a crucial role in shaping the club's legacy

A Night to Remember: The Final Meeting of RY2024/25 for President Dr. Alaric and His Board 11 June 2025 | Renaissance Hotel, Kuala Lumpur On the evening of 11 June, the Renaissance Hotel Kuala Lumpur came alive with spirit, heart, and Rotary passion as 60 distinguished members and guests gathered for a landmark occasion — the final club meeting of RY2024/25 under the stewardship of President Dr. Alaric. It was more than just a closing chapter; it was a celebration of legacy, of service, and of the fire that defines Rotary Kuala Lumpur DiRaja. The room was electric — not just with mood lighting and flawless sound, but with the energy of purpose. Among the guests of honour were two influential figures in Malaysia’s healthcare and pharmaceutical space: CEO of Prince Court Medical Centre, Dr. Shuba Srinivasan, and CEO of Duopharma, Ms. Aida. Their presence symbolised how deeply the club’s projects now intertwine with national healthcare leadership. The meeting commenced at 7:30 PM sharp with the reverent playing of Negaraku, followed by salutations to His Majesty the King, and the rousing chorus of the club song — a tradition that never fails to stir pride in the hearts of Rotarians. With a warm smile, President Dr. Alaric led a birthday celebration for RCKLDR’s June celebrants, setting a light-hearted tone before the evening soared into powerful territory. President-Elect Dato’ Dr. Prakash Rao then took to the stage, delivering a strong and visionary update about his upcoming installation this August. His plans ignited optimism, foreshadowing a vibrant Rotary year ahead. But one of the night’s most heartfelt moments came next — the recognition of 11 Paul Harris Fellows (PHF) for their unwavering commitment to Rotary International and its mission. Each name announced echoed with reverence and respect: • Incoming Assistant Governor Ajit Johl • Charter President Dato’ Andrew Cheah • President-Elect Dato’ Dr. Prakash Rao • Past District Governor Dato’ Mustapha Ma • Rtn. Dato’ Dr. Sevinder Singh • Rtn. Dato’ Dave Teoh • Rtn. Dr. Jaideep Singh • Rtn. Dato Alvin • The late Rtn. Hor Kean Seng (pin presented to his beloved wife, Helen) • Past Assistant Governor Nagesh Mahajan • Rtn. Suren Hendry The recognition of the late Rtn. Hor Kean Seng brought a hushed emotion into the room. His legacy continues — not only through his generous donation of RM250,000 to the Kuala Lumpur Rotary Charity Foundation, but also in the RM12,000 cheque presented that evening to Persatuan Penyakit Motor Neuron Malaysia by his wife Helen and their son, a fellow Rotarian. It was a moving reminder that even in passing, a Rotarian’s light can guide generations forward. Then came the moment the entire room had been waiting for — the official launch of the “Gift of Sight” Project. With every light perfectly poised and every note of music carefully timed, the energy rose as members began the countdown. President Dr. Alaric and Dr. Shuba Srinivasan took the stage, placing their hands on a glowing plasma ball. In that instant, lights swirled, music surged, and the launch video ignited the screen behind them — announcing a groundbreaking collaboration between Prince Court Medical Centre and Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur DiRaja. This initiative will offer free cataract surgery to Malaysians in the B40 income group — households earning less than RM5,000 per month — restoring not just sight, but dignity and independence. In recognition of her profound service and impact, Dr. Shuba was conferred a Paul Harris Fellow pin and certificate. Her speech was deeply moving. She shared the inspiring story of young Adam Hanif, a child born bed-bound, who today walks because of the joint efforts between Prince Court and RCKLDR. Her words resonated with gratitude and vision — a commitment to a future where compassion and collaboration rewrite lives. To close the evening, President Dr. Alaric delivered his final address as President of RCKLDR. With a voice full of both pride and sentiment, he thanked his board, fellow members, and partners who walked alongside him during this transformative year. He spoke of challenges overcome, bonds strengthened, and impact created. And with a heartfelt invitation, he called on all to join the upcoming Swan Song — the final celebration of his Rotary journey. As the evening drew to a close, one truth echoed in every heart: this was more than a farewell. It was a tribute to service. A crescendo of purpose. And a promise — that the fire President Dr. Alaric lit will continue to burn in the hearts of every Rotarian who was privileged to witness it.
