Customized Van: For Rumah Amal Cheshire Selangor

In July 2008, our Club was approached by Pn Khatijah Suleiman, President of Selangor Cheshire Home. She made the appeal that the Home desperately needed a customized van to transport wheel-chair bound guests for medical travel and therapy visits. At the next Board meeting, the BoD approved the support of this request and this was then communicated to the Cheshire Home.

Several meetings ensued to finalize the selection of the van model, the customization of wheel-chair lift and harness, and also make arrangements for excise customs exemption of duty on the vehicle. Although most of the administrative efforts were made by the Cheshire Home, our Club was represented at decision-making meetings by President Francis, Club Service Director Steve Lau and me.

A Toyota Hi-Ace van was selected by the Home and approved by the Board by October 2008. Application for duty exemption was approved in February 2009 and customization was carried out for the van in March-April. The van was then handed over in an official ceremony on 12th May 2009 at the Selangor Cheshire Home offices in Jalan Ipoh.

This hand-over ceremony was graced by President Francis, PE Dato’ Rizal (whose late mother Toh Puan Sa’adah had founded the Home in 1963), Vocational Service Director Justin Teoh and me. Again, RC KL DiRaja received good press on this charitable initiative when The New Straits Times “Streets” published the write-up of this event on 9th June 2009.
