Past Presidents

Attan Akmar

2007-08

Due to its magnitude, the project 'Living and Learning Aids for Handicapped Children' - started in 2006 / 07 (David Teh) - was carried over into this Rotary year under the able chairmanship of PP Chan Kam Fatt. The project is expected to be concluded during Rotary year 2008 / 09 (Francis Chan) when all the hearing aids co-sponsored by Siemens Malaysia will have been handed out to hearing impaired children.

The Malaysian Golf Carnival, organised in locations all over the peninsula by the Community Service Committee under the leadership of its very energetic director Rtn Raymond Chin raised the sum of RM116,000 which was distributed to eleven charity organisations ranging from orphanages to haemodialysis centres. This project also provided a high level of media and PR visibility, both for our club and Rotary. This resulted in the club obtaining a PR grant for Rotary International, a first in our district.

A Merdeka Party for 100 orphaned children was held together with Sheraton Subang Hotel & Towers. Together with MST Ad Suria the club held an outing for 73 orphans from different homes at the 'Eye on Malaysia' ferris wheel.

The club donated RM 34,000 to the District Disaster Relief Fund for victims of the Typhoon Nargis disaster in Myanmar. Half of this sum came from club members and friends.

Vocational Service activities included service awards handed out to Kuala Lumpur traffic policemen and nurses.

The International Service Committee assisted in a 'clean drinking water' project at a school in Thailand carried out by our sister club, RC Hatyai Nakarin. A student from Geneva, Switzerland, was hosted by Pres. Attan's family under the International Youth Exchange programme. This year, our club hosted the 3rd Sister Club Golf Fellowship with RC Raffles City, which is an annual event.

Fellowship activities included a Deepavali Open House hosted by PP Kulasegaran, a Chinese New Year dinner hosted by the Chinese members, a Hari Raya luncheon hosted by the Muslim members and an Oktoberfest at the residence of Rtn Herbert Jess.

The club's website was revamped and a long overdue cleaning up of membership records at Rotary International undertaken. Amalgamation of the numerous funds in the Kuala Lumpur Rotary Charity Foundation was initiated. Renovation work at the two vacant floors of Wisma Rotary, Balakong, commenced. One floor will be turned into the club's archives upon completion which is expected during Rotary year 2008 / 09 (Francis Chan).
