Donated a fully equipped ambulance valued at RM 85,000 to St. John Ambulance Malaysia to help start its Emergency Ambulance Service. Established the Rotary Training Institute for Carers of the Handicapped (RoTICH) and raised RM 30,000 to set up the RoTICH Fund under our Rotary Charity Foundation. Organised the first Training Workshop for Carers and Parents of Down's Syndrome Children. Held an exhibition on 1st & 2nd Mar. 97 to commemorate the 50th Death Anniversary of our Founder Paul Harris and also tell the story of our 69 years of service to the community.
Went on Radio 4 to publicise our club's history and Rotary in general, winning District Special Recognition Award. Also won District Special Recognition Award for sponsoring Rotary Club of Kampong Baharu, the first Bahasa/ English Bilingual club in the country, which received its Charter on 13th Nov. 96. Organised the "Green the Earth-Green Kuala Lumpur" project jointly with our Rotaractors and Interactors, and raised RM 45,000 to help three poor schools and for other community projects. Planted the first trees and adopted a corner of the newly set up Taman Tasik Pudu Ulu.
This project won for our Rotaractors the Rl President Special Recognition Award for Asia Pacific Region. Donated a computer with email and Internet facilities to the Befrienders. Distributed RM 28,000 from our Rotary Handicapped Children Welfare Fund to various organisations and institutions. Given out scholarships worth RM 22,000 to 110 poor and handicapped students. Raised RM10,600 for the flood victims of South China, RM10,000 for the Orang Asli of the Pos Dipang landslide and RM 5,000 for those affected by Tropical Storm "Greg" in Sabah. Donated US$1,000 to the Christina Noble Foundation for street children in Vietnam. Contributed US$1,000 towards a Revolving Loan Fund established by the Rotary Club of Mosman, Sydney to alleviate poverty in Son Kien Village in Vietnam, and US$1,000 to Rotary Club of Singapore to help provide hearing aids to deaf children in Indonesia. Donated US$6,150 to Rotary Clubs in Bombay, India for Polio Immunisation Programme. Won District Outstanding Vocational Service Award for the Interact Career Guidance Seminar. Organised "Vocation at Work" experience for Interactors. Donated RM2,500 towards a joint Melbourne Taylor College Scholarship. Presented Vocational Award to Radio & TV Broadcaster cum Theatre Artist, Faridah Merican.
